I’ve been kicking around this idea in my head for quite some time. Basically I wanted to create a piece based on the idea of pointilism and newspaper photos. I used 4 gradations of spraypaint from black, to white to create the original ground for the painting. Then I coated the entire surface with a thin flesh toned oil glaze. Finally, I used a cloth on my finger to remove the glaze from certain points. I was surprised that the overspray from the points created new gradations of value as well in the neighboring points. Which gave the piece more depth.

Another thrift store painting modification. The original painting was so hideous that I couldn’t think of anything to do with it for quite some time. That clunky ass fence completely broke up the whole composition. The sky was also really strange. Getting way too dark on the top left corner. This really weighs down that corner, and creates a sense of gloom over the house. So I taped off what I wanted to save and spray painted the whole sky a gradating dark blue. I then created the planet by spraying a lot of colors together and then dabbing it with shiny newspaper advertisements. The fence and the bridge had to go, I wanted a human element. So I created this generic looking little alien guy. I like to think of him just as a normal alien. Chillin outside his cottage at night and looking up at the sky and wondering if anything is out there. lol.

Thought it would be fun to work on a fall painting since I’m certainly beginning to feel the chill here up in North Dakota. This is another thrift store painting, and I painted in the upside down duck. I went for the bright blue color on the frame because I wanted to bring out the oranges present in the painting.
I am certainly going to miss naming all the different birds that came into my backyard. In Prague I am living pretty much smack in the center of the city and here I am surrounded by open fields. I have been painting animals in my paintings for quite some time so it was nice to see them in real life rather than only on a computer screen.
Another painting of a little boy. Seems like most of the thrift store art I’ve scrounged up so far deals with either nature (including a large body of water such as a lake or a stream) or children. There’s also all the Jesus paintings, but those are so easy to mess with that it isn’t even challenging. In this painting I did my best to try and copy the boys face and turn it in the opposite direction. It’s an interesting challenge because I was looking at the right side as reference and trying to mirror it. I also changed the first page on the book to a black cat. Why a black cat? I’m not sure. All the modifications were done in acrylics, and then a heavy glaze was poured on. I do this not only to create a a unifying color, but it also makes the surface smooth and I like being able to see brush strokes, but not the texture of the brushstrokes.
When I first got this painting it was completely faded. I started layering some glazes on the background and then slowly built up the trees again. Of course the Swamp Thing was an easy character to place in this environment since as I built up the background it started getting really dense and murky. Then, once the painting was finished I applied a very thick glaze. This gives the surface a very high shine.

This Original images for this piece came from a thick photograph I found of a space shuttle launch. You can see the pre-modified images by looking at the second image. I then used acrylic medium, sharpies, and acrylic paint to “improve” the original image. The background image comes from another large photo reproduction of a babbling brook in a forest.

This painting was a reproduction printed on paper and secured to cardboard. I then hand painted in new shoes, pigtails, and made the chin smaller. I also painted the frame pink, and glazed the color of the shirt pink as well. The original painting was of a boy and can be seen in the second image. My intent was to make subtle changes which would make a little boy playing with a truck into a little girl playing with a truck. AFter all the modifications were finished the entire surface was covered with a thick glaze of acrylic medium which unifies the painting and make the modifications blend into the original work seamlessly.

This painting was a reproduction printed on a log which was cut into pieces. You can still see the bark going around the perimeter of the painting. I painted in the UFOs, The Sky, and the Landscape. I then covered the entire surface with a thick glaze so the painting still has that old feel, but with a little twist.
